Evaluate Within Pearl Type

The next sections apply the seven value factors to the major cultured pearl types. By this point, you already know that size, shape, color, luster, surface quality, nacre quality, and matching all matter. The important next step is learning how those factors appear within each pearl category.

As you move through the guides, begin with observation. Describe the pearl in front of you first. Consider its size, shape, color, luster, surface, nacre, and matching when matching applies. Then consider whether those qualities are typical, rare, desirable, or problematic for that particular pearl type.

This approach keeps the focus on the pearl itself rather than on a label. A grade can help organize quality or communicate value, but it should always be supported by what the pearl actually shows.
