Akoya: Luster

Luster the most important value factors for akoya pearls. It refers to the quantity and quality of light reflected from the pearl’s surface or just under the surface. High-luster akoya pearls show crisp, bright reflections, while lower-luster pearls appear softer, duller, or more diffused.

Luster in Akoya Pearls

Akoya pearls are especially prized for their bright, reflective luster. In fine examples, reflected light sources appear sharp and well defined, and objects reflected on the surface may be recognizable. This bright, mirror-like appearance is one of the qualities that separates fine akoya pearls from lower-quality material.

Luster should be judged under good, consistent lighting. Compare pearls side by side whenever possible, because differences in luster become much easier to see when pearls are viewed together.

Luster Categories

Using GIA’s luster terminology, akoya pearl luster may be described as follows:

Excellent: Reflections are bright, crisp, and sharply defined. Reflected objects may be recognizable on the pearl’s surface.

Very Good: Reflections are bright and nearly sharp, with only slight softness at the edges.

Good: Reflections are bright but noticeably softer. Reflected objects may be visible, but they are not sharply defined.

Fair: Reflections are weak or blurred. The pearl may still show some surface brightness, but it lacks depth and sharpness.

Poor: Reflections are dim, diffused, and dull. The pearl lacks the lively appearance expected of fine akoya pearls.

Luster and Value

For akoya pearls, luster is a major driver of beauty and value, but it should not be judged alone. A pearl with excellent luster may still be less valuable if the nacre is too thin, the surface is heavily blemished, the shape is poor, or the matching is weak. The finest akoya pearls combine strong luster with good nacre quality, clean surface, attractive color, pleasing shape, appropriate size, and careful matching.
